Karateka_latino Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 I don't think there's a real "traditional" martial art left, at least not that can we reach easily. Most of the Arts we train now have come from modification of even older styles..
Kensai Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 "Traditional", I think really only referrers to the arts roots. EVERY art has evolved over time, Bruce Lee was not the first to bring up the idea of evolution of the MA. Every art, whether is be Shaolin, AikiJujtusu to BJJ, JKD and MMA have evolved. Its just that the period of evolution of say Shaolin was some 2000 years ago, and its still as effective now as it was then. Humans still only have 2 arms and legs. Yours in Aiki
taebot Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Shaolin is STILL evolving! Witness their discovery and use of tourists... "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." George Orwell
monkeygirl Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 I don't fit it any one category...I guess I'm sort of "Traditional"--minus the disdain for Progressives, minus the close-mindedness of techniques and minus the fact that my school isn't traditional. So you see? I obviously don't fit in it, yet it is still the "best answer", when compared to the others. I believe my methods work, but I also keep an open mind towards others' techniques. I fight (well I guess you can call it that...mostly it just feels like flailing), but I also do katas. I believe in effective self-defense and forward thinking. *sniffle* Just like always, I don't fit in 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.
Kensai Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 What makes your style "American"? Yours in Aiki.
Thai_Kick2 Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 "MMA fighters" All I want to learn is effective, proven techniques that will work in the ring or streets. All theory-based styles and techniques need not apply! Muay Thai the science of 8 limbs!
magikchiongson Posted January 10, 2003 Posted January 10, 2003 That's why you learn Principle and not Style. I own you.
Thai_Kick2 Posted January 10, 2003 Posted January 10, 2003 Principle... This is still theory, you can understand all the principles of the techniques or styles you want, but all those principles will still be based on theory until it is proven to work time and time again. The truth is style does matter. If I want to become a MMA fighter I'm not going to train in Monkey Kung fu and Tae Kwon Do, If I want to improve my heath I'm not going to train in Muay Thai and Sambo, If I want to learn Self-Defence I'm not going to train in Tae-bo and Yoga. Muay Thai the science of 8 limbs!
LightFighterZero Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 People have their own preference in style. Some find secureity in modern Self defense while others find a sense of accomplishment and meaning in Traditional styles. I personally like traditional styles. Karate and Hapkido have worked good for me so far. "Defeat is not defeat unless it is accepted as reality in your own mind"
