Thanks for all the replies. I have decided to use hair sprays to keep my hair from moving all over my face. Do you guys know any specific strong hair sprays for martial arts or anything like that? Thanks again.

I honestly don't think you'll find anything. It depends how long your hair is as to how effective this will be. As a female with shoulder length hair, I can tell you no matter how much hair spray, you will look like a dishevelled mess if you are jumping around. Just look at any female in a nightclub at the end of the night. Hair's all over the place.

Let's take Rika Usami as an example. My hair is very similar to her's but mine is a tiny, just a tiny bit shorter and it's not straight like hers. It's kind of wavy. When she performs a Kata that has a jump in it, her hair stays still when she executes the jump even when she is mid-air. I'm pretty sure a lot of people might not know which hairspray she uses to keep her hair still, but a recommendation of any good hair sprays would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have long hair as well, so I usually tie it up in a "top knot" for training, or a "man bun" (when it is very long).

I often get it cut before competitions, so that it looks clean, but it is still long enough to get in my face. So, I use hair spray.

There are lots of different types that should be fine, I personally use Fudge Professional Membrane Gas (which is really heavy duty).

I might eventually do a post on how to look good for competition, so go check out my website in my profile (I might post on here as well).

Hope I have helped!

What about a can of Aquanet?

Going through middle school and high school in the late 80s-early 90s, it was impossible to walk past lockers and not get a face full of the stuff. Destroyed the ozone layer too, but all in the name of big hair that was bulletproof :)

Edit: I never used it. My mullet didn’t need it. A little mousse did me just fine. :)

Were you too embarrassed? I personally have no shame. Well, ALMOST no shame :)

As I say to my students when I screw up: Public humiliation builds character!

I have a lot of character. ;-)

No, I wasn't embarrassed. You just beat me to it!

If you're absolutely decided on the fixative route, I wonder if you can try whatever product young sumo-tori use before their locks get long enough for a real chonmage:

I think back in the day they just used oil, but as for now I'm unsure.

I can attest to the annoyance of long hair. I usually keep mine short, but lately it's gotten so long that even a ponytail doesn't help anymore. I don't know how long your hair is exactly now, but the solution will vary based on that. At some length you must go up or go home though, even if you are a sumo-tori.

If your absolutely fixated on keeping the long hair do what the Japanese, Okinawans and Chinese did. Wear it in a top knot (Bun). This way you'll look like a Samurai and not have hair whipping your face.

And they say I'm not hip. :D

Just don't be so hip that you fall and break it.
