G95champ Posted December 5, 2002 Posted December 5, 2002 Ok 3 guys go into a hotel. They buy a room that costs 30.00 dollars. The three men go up to the room and set down. A few minutes later the clerk realizes he overcharged the men. The room only should cost 25.00. So the clerk sends the bell hop to the room with 5 ones in change. The bell hop don't know how to split the money. So he gives each man a dollar and he keeps 2. So the question is what happend to the other dollar? Each man paid 10.00 = 30.00 The Bell Hop gives each man back 1.00 So each man actully only paid 9.00 9 x 3 = 27.00 The Bell Hop kept 2 27 + 2 is only 29.00 So where did the other dollar go? A friend of mine asked me this the other day and its been killing me. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
diamondick Posted December 5, 2002 Posted December 5, 2002 If the dude is stealing dont add subtract!!!! Is that it?

G95champ Posted December 6, 2002 Author Posted December 6, 2002 Keep going I'll fill you all in later. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Red J Posted December 6, 2002 Posted December 6, 2002 Total paid out by men 30 refunded to men -3 net paid out by men 27 , 27/3= 9 per man bell hop money -2 net to hotel 25 So it is 30-3=27-2=25 or The billed amount is 25 plus the 2 for the bell hop =27. This is the amount the guys paid out. 9x3=27, now add the 3 refunded to the guys, 3+27=30. In your post you said the bell hop kept 2 and then you added it to the 27 which was the result of 30-3. You should subtract the 2 because you started the problem from 30. Get it? I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
G95champ Posted December 19, 2002 Author Posted December 19, 2002 No your wrong as well The answer is when they bill was only 25.00 the men never paid 10.00 each. They only paid 8.33 each. Thus 8.33 x 3 is 27.99999999999. So the bell hop kept 2 and that makes 28. I worked and worked on that thing. The logic changes thus the math don't add up. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Red J Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 G95- Take another look. 25 in the register plus 3 given as refund plus two taken by the bellhop equals 30. 25+2+3=30 BTW 8.33 X 3 = 24.99 I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
G95champ Posted December 19, 2002 Author Posted December 19, 2002 8x3 is 24.99 your right So they each paid 8 not 10. When the bell hop gives them each back a dollar that makes 9.33 9.33 x 3 is 27.99 Then the bell hop kept the other 2. When you look at it as a pure subtract problem it all fits. The trick comes in when you say they paid 10 (which they never did) Thus when they got a dollar back they only paid 9. Then you follow the line of logic that 9 x 3 is 27. Then if the bell hop only kept 2 where is the missing dollar. What your saying is right but the trick is making them x what they paid by 3. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Red J Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 The trick is that it is a subtraction problem. 30 paid out. 10 x 3 -3 refunded now its 9x3 -2 stolen 25 paid in register. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
