Recommended Posts

Greetings, KF denizens :D

Just joined and thought I'd introduce myself. After many years (10+) of being away from martial arts, I'm trying to get back into it. Although older and wiser, I'm also fatter and less flexible...

It's funny, the mind remembers the basics and even some kata, but the body just doesn't want to comply.

Brett.

What style are you thinking about?

I'm leaning towards japanese/okinawan karate... I'd like to carry on with 5hito Ryu, but there isn't (AFAIK) a dojo nearby. I'm going to check out a couple of local dojos (Chito-ryu and Tsuruoka) to see what they're like. Anything that's not a McDojo... something not too big, not too small :)

Welcome to KarateForums.com, I think I may be able to help you in your dojo search. I would suggest looking up the dojo mentioned below. This dojo is run my the head of the organization I train under. He is an 8 degree black and a wise and nice man, and it's a super traditional dojo, community environement! THe only think is that it is a goju ryu karate-do dojo. Anyways check it out and see if it is right for you, let me know how it works out, good luck. :)

Given enough time, any man may master the physical. With enough knowledge, any man may become wise. It is the true warrior who can master both....and surpass the result.

Welcome BRG. I had a simular layoff and have found my way back to decent form in short order. Train hard and have fun!

I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.

Howdy! Welcome!

Being young and I've learned that underestimating fat, unflexible opponents is more foolish than my trying condition my hand on a metal dumbbell (please don't ask). Last week I sparred on of your kind who is getting better all the time. He was also very short and landed a very well timed, and controlled side-kick on the edge of my knee. My response:

"Sweet shot. That might not have givin' you a score in a WTF tourney, but that would wipe me out on the street."

Good Luck on your journey in the martial arts.
