OMO PLATA FROM HALF GUARD

Recommended Posts

The past two weeks have been all about bottom half guard for us. First, we looked at passing and attacking from the top position, then, we focused on dealing with attacks from the bottom.

Specifically, we looked at using the fundamental movements in jiu jitsu to create space for hip motion that set us up for attack.

Here, we look at the Omo Plata from bottom half:

Who else is utilizing the half guard? Do you focus on exclusively on sweeping or on attacks as well?

I suppose thats a relative question (as to what I use in half). I dont usually fight much from bottom half, because I arch away to a stand in base position and sit up into butterfly/hooks game.

For MMA I use much more of a deep half guard game because the reactions from the person on top are a little different than in BJJ. Most in this situation keep pressure high on the shoulders to keep you pinned and have a good area to strike. Because of this though, it makes getting under ridiculously easy (as long as you're ok with getting punched in the face...).
