ad Posted November 15, 2002 Posted November 15, 2002 hey all, i just got a real shouting by my instructor yesterday, but i really dont blame him. basically what the situation is, is that he aint gonna let me grade in december but now instead he will only let me grade next march, so basically my martial art training has been paused for 3 months, which really sort of dents my confidence and enthusiasm of it. i was not allowed to grade cuz of my punctuality and just knowing the stuff. i did pretty much know everything, it was just the nerves got the best of me and i couldnt do most stuff when my instructor did a practice grading. in terms of the punctuality problems, well ive literally put 18 lessson in out of a possible 44. You may think it cuz im lazy or whatever, but it aint, i just really havent had the time to go and train anymore, i mean i aint getting that along with the others in the club, ive got too many exams which are really stopping my from training, and plus im fasting so i dont even have the energy to train without eating. this 3 months delayed in all fairness really ticks me off, it just gonna reduce my interst in it even more. monkeygirl Posted November 15, 2002 Posted November 15, 2002 Remember that martial arts are 90% mental and 10% physical. Keeping a positive and respectful attitude is very important. And you never know...your instructor may have delayed your grading simply to see your reaction. I'm not saying that's the reason, but keep it in mind. 1st dan & Asst. KickChick Posted November 15, 2002 Posted November 15, 2002 Yoda said it best to Luke Skywalker during their Jedi training sessions in the Star Wars ... "You must have patience!" I agree with monkeygirl ... 'cept I tend to believe the playing field is a bit more equal as far as the mental and physical aspects of martial arts. Its important to attend class regularly but some students need help with time management as in your case!. The critical concept here is that most of us know what we need to do to achieve our goals but other variables can manipulate our ability to follow through. Recognizing this personal roadblock, engaging patience and following through on the initial commitment is what it will take to be successful. Priorities and Patience! And go eat something!!!
Kensai Posted November 15, 2002 Posted November 15, 2002 Agreed KickChick. Exactly what I was going to say. Take Care.

Freestyler Posted November 16, 2002 Posted November 16, 2002 Hi, I don't really think the belts should me your major concern. What's more important your learning, or getting a new pretty coloured belt ? Your training has NOT been delayed at all. The only thing delaying your training IMO is your lack of attendance and your mentality. When you encounter set backs, make sure you're heading in the right direction, change your direction if necessary and work harder! Stephen Covey has a nice analogy when he says it's no good having a map of of Detroit labelled Chicago, 'cause the harder you work, the quicker you'll end up frustrated; which highlights the importance of having the right direction.
G95champ Posted November 16, 2002 Posted November 16, 2002 We have a system that it takes at least 30 classes before we even consider a test. At the same time 3 months have to pass at least. I tend to side with your teacher. Rank is somehting too many peoiple give away. Im not saying you don't deserve it because I don't know but look at it from his view. If he starts allowing people to test whenever then what does that say about him as a teacher? You can't get something for nothing. You can say what if and well this or that all you want but in the long run when faced with a problem look in the miror first and ask what could I have done to fix this situation. Good luck and don't get down on the situation but understand it and grow from it. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
SaiFightsMS Posted November 16, 2002 Posted November 16, 2002 Sooner or later most people reach a point in their training where there progress slows. It can be a real downer when that happens. But that is when you really begin to find out why you are training in the first place. If all you want is rank that is when many quit. There is nothing wrong with waiting an extra three months to test. There is nothing with having to wait a year or two between tests. Actually at higher ranks the time between testing spreads out a lot. I am not eligible to test again for at least two years.
Kenpo123 Posted November 16, 2002 Posted November 16, 2002 your instructor may see your lack of punctuality as a lack of respect for his time and your commitment to the art he is teaching. Life is full of choices. I believe once you make the choice to make time to be in class on time and more often, your relationship with the instructor and the school as a whole will improve greatly.
