Your first submission

My first "submission" was probably at orange belt, about a year into my training. Orange belt self-defense was single-handed hair grabs. The defense involved a wristlock. However, this wasn't like a grappling match or anything, my partner just stood there while I tried to make him/her tap. I honestly don't remember the specific instance. I guess I just didn't think about it.

Now that I've progressed through the ranks, though, I really wish I had kept track of that sort of stuff--sort of like a martial arts "baby book". Just like babies have first teeth, first words, first walking, etc., I wish I kept track of first belt, first sparring match, first tournament, and yes, first submission. I guess it's too late now :(

In tae kwon do, we did a lot of standing wrist and arm locks and submissions like that. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu we learned my first submission, the keylock or "americana" from the mount, on the second or third class. I first submitted someone with a basic "X-choke" with the gi, from the closed guard.

The first night that we did grappling I got a submission with a simple front neck choke. My experience with wrestling really gave me an advantage. The tough part is applying the moves that are "illegal" in wrestling.

I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.

I think my first submission was an armbar from bottom on my friend before i took formal grappling training...

"razor elbows, killer knees, iron fists and monster kicks"

"Nice punch!!!, now let's see how well you punch with a broken arm"
