Hawkmoon
Your 'pet' hate, that thing that makes you grind your teeth! We enjoy, we love, we live, we eat , sleep , breath MA no matter what the system/style.We thrive on the combat, the challenge to complete and win, we love the history the research in to why this is done that way, what we can do if a three legged purple spotted monster was to attack from behind!...I suspect we all have at least that one thing (maybe more) whatever it is its a pet dislike/hate, something that just annoys us,makes us bite our tongue, or shy away 'hoping', waiting for it to end soon!So what peeves you, whats that little thing that just annoys you more than it should? “A human life gains luster and strength only when it is polished and tempered.”Sosai Masutatsu Oyama (1923 - 1994) Founder of Kyokushin Karate. mazzybear
I would have to say cockyness/arrogance basically folk who THINK they know it all. We have this kid, around 13, a 3rd Kyu. He's always telling folk that they're doing things wrong and they should be doing it this way, or that way. Which would be fine if he wasn't talking utter nonsense and could do the thingst that he was telling other people to do himself. When the shoe is on the other foot and he is picked up on something, the dummy is well and truly spat and the huff begins. Our instructor has told him on more than one occasion to wind his neck in, that he DOESN'T know it all. Senior Dan grades have told him, I once told him to lay off another kid whose back he'd been on the entire class, but still he continues. It drives me up the wall. I know we all (no matter our grade) can learn something new or a different way of doing things from lower grades, a fresh air of eyes if you like but this kid is dangerous IMO. We have a great bunch of kids at the club but, man, this kid.............. So yeah, cockyness/arrogance is my biggest pet peeve Be water, my friend. jaypo
Mine would be disrespect of any kind. I have seen a few times where students just ignore the instructor or play wayyyy too much on the line.I also don't like when someone tries to act like they know it all while the instructor is teaching. Spartacus Maximus
Mine would have to be collectors and dabblers. People who try to pick up as many kata or techniques as possible but are unwilling to take the time to fully understand them or make them usable. These types are unable to commit themselves to a single system for long enough to make any real progress and often jump from one thing to the next always looking for the ultimate martial arts that will make them the ultimate fighter. Someone came to our club as a brown belt from another style, shuko kai I believe; he trained with us for quite a while and had great spirit in class. Then he disappeared without word... last I heard, he had gained his black belt in Ninjitsu, not long after he left us..... My pet peeve is people who have potential but do not make the most of it. In particular, kids who progress at a phenomenal rate because they have natural ability, but then become too lazy to push themselves when it really counts, ie brown belt and above. It's incredibly frustrating to watch a karateka, who you know has the potential to be brilliant, plod along in mediocrity because they know they are 'good' but don't push themselves to be great. In some cases, they slide backwards and lose their ability when they stop trying..... argh, how to invoke spirit and motivation!? That is so difficult. Wastelander
Jewelry on the mat. I'm CONSTANTLY telling people not to wear rings, earrings, watches, bracelets, FitBits, necklaces, etc., when they are in class. It drives me nuts. Maybetrue
ippon = 3 points. If ippon means 3 points, does a Shodan become a Sandan in a WKF organization by default ? interesting knowledge
Spartacus Maximus
People who come to the dojo but only practise or make any effort when the instructor is looking directly at them. This is very common in children and teens but believe it or not, many adults. The dojo is NOt a social club and sensei is not going to do your training for you.
