DWx Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Does anyone here subscribe or regularly read any martial arts based magazines? Blackbelt Mag is probably the most well known but what else do you guys recommend? "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius
Titanium Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 I have one called Masters. All different articles by MA masters. They have a website which is mastersmag.comI have Black Belt mag too but that's about it. “Spirit first, technique second.” – Gichin Funakoshi
Spartacus Maximus Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 I used to subscribe to most of them including BB Mag. To that I preferred Inside Karate.I also liked Dragon Times, which I believe is available online. There are also a couple magazines from outside the English-speaking world that I read often. Classical Fighting Arts is also an excellent publication I highly recommend because of the serious, quality content. This one is also found online as well as in magazine format
sensei8 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I've had a subscription to Black Belt for as long as I can remember. Over the 50 plus years, I've had a numerous subscriptions to the wide world of the MA; covering a plethora of different MA styles. Karate Illustrated was a must have back in the 70's because it covered current and future tournaments; it was the bible for following the MA tournament scenes.CFA, has been in my magazine subscriptions index for as long as CFA has been publishing its fine work. It's the bible of anything Okinawan...a no frills publication!TKD is covered well on the Barnes and Noble shelves with many different titles...I too, have a subscription to a few of them!UFC/MMA is also covered quite well on B&N shelves, yet, I only have a subscription to the UFC format! These are just a small few listed magazine subscriptions that I've had or still have. However, and for some time, once the economic downturn a few years ago, I cancelled them all because I felt that money could be used elsewhere. **Proof is on the floor!!!
Judodad_karateson Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I don't subscribe, I like to go to Hasting's and grab a few every now and then. Blackbelt is Pretty cool for entertainment, keeping up to date with the latest trends. Juijitsu Magazine is pretty good. Not just for grappling, it's got some great tips for fitness training and MA mental aspects.
muttley Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I used to subscribe to this :[urlhttp://https://www.shotokanmag.com/[/url]It was a dedicated shotokan magazine, you got 4 issues year but it was full of really good and appropriate articles such as power generation and interviews with some very experienced instructors.I haven't subscribed to a magazine in ages, might have to go looking.

Spodo Komodo Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 The UK magazine scene is dying fast. I used to love Traditional Karate but it got rolled into Combat Magazine and reduced to about ten pages of karate. Now Combat is no more and all we are left with is Martial Arts Illustrated (mediocre at best) and a few Ju Jitsu titles that are more like celebrity tabloids than a proper MA mag. I found a picture of my local newsagents from 2000 in the local paper a few weeks ago, three quarters of the shelves were hobby, sports and serious magazines such as The Economist, New Scientist, Practical Astronomy etc. I looked in there last Friday and four fifths of the shelves are celebrity gossip rags, the remaining being car and football magazines, basically celebrity gossip for "the lads".

Its very sad this...I'm sure they can be ordered online, however it would be great to walk into any shops that sell mags and pick up a few MA mags; the demand must be down. “Spirit first, technique second.” – Gichin Funakoshi
muttley Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 There are loads of these kind of e-magazines that you can subscribe to. I know they aren't like the traditional off the shelf magazine (I think the only one from back in the day left is MAI which really has degraded to quite poor subject material, you can subscribe to Blackbelt magazine online I believe too). There are these online ones you can "subscribe" to free of charge:http://paper.li/karategb/1307028522?edition_id=a2a83d90-52f8-11e5-9060-0cc47a0d1609http://paper.li/iainabernethy/1376566131To name but a few, the first one seems to be not as good as Iain's one to be honest.Maybe there is a market for someone to kickstart the market again, where you start I have no idea!
