Thx for replies, guys.

Yea, I was kinda stupid and lucky. ;)

Moving around would have been natural, but till the last moment I was hoping there would be no fight. Moving into a fighting stance would have provoked it, I guess (as if my making an issue of the whole thing in the first place didn't).

Mi nose and jaw have healed by now ;) and for the future, I guess I'll carry a knife or something heavier. And keep walking when not attacked. ;)

The blade is only silent until it cuts through your flesh.

And get yourself into a knife fight? Heh, even if you know what you're doing that should be the last thing you want. If you insist on carrying a weapon then try using a kubaton, it's easy to adapt to most martial arts techniques.

I fear you had already done the provocation. On the up sde, the multiple-attacker fight was very short. I'm not sure how much I'd charicterize standing, getting hit a "fight" ;)

That would be irressposble considering your tendancy to pick useless fights. I would think you would be better served simply avoiding provoking situations. I generally work by the guideline "If I'm gonna loose, would it be worth the try anyway".

A KNIFE, if you start carring around weapons then you are going to get yourself killed.

That what I mean Jerry, carring a knife is going to cause more trouble and lead to a worse situation.

Take Care.

A Knife? No way!!!

If you weren't that proud, nothing would have happened, but then we wouldn't have a subject here :) You already know it's best to let this kind of freaks pass by, and just ignore them. If put in a similar multiatacker situation, aim at the boss, try to move and hit as hard as you can. Try not to let them surround you and rotate thus knowing where they are. As the others said find a wall to have them in front of you. Vital points and whenever possible run. If they follow you can take them one by one. They can't all run at the same pace.

And never rely on knives. Guess the implications would be much bigger

With serious multiple attackers, movement is the only hope of survival. You are not superman. I don't care how big or strong or skilled you are, if you are unarmed and taking on eight people intent on hurting you, you will be hurt.

If you engage them it should be done moving as fast as possible. You can't get surrounded or you are in big trouble. Packs of little hyenas can kill lions.

Run as fast as possible, as far as possible. If you want to engage them, do it while escaping so they are spread out. Don't ever, ever let it come down to exchanging blows, you are far better off running. You can set up ambushes, find weapons and find other people if you run. If you want to fight dedicated multiple attackers, you can find out what it feels like to be stomped in the head. (Hey, if that's what you're after...)

I made that mistake once. Fortunately, my attackers were not seriously trying to hurt me, but they easily could have despite being weaker and smaller than me. Ohh, I should have pulled my ultimate style: running-like-a-bat-out-of-hell.
