yamesu Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Skill is more important than belt colour.Spend more time on developing yourself as a martial artist, and in time the rest will come. If your looking for a quick black belt, then it sounds like the current school you're in is not for you. To me it appears that your instructor is more keen on developing skill set than pumping people through the ranks. This is a GREAT thing!Over the years I've gone toe to toe with people who have trained for much longer than me, and have higher grades than me. That never automatically qualified me for a higher grade. It simply meant that I had developed myself in one area more than them. Train to train. Train for self development. Don't train just to get a belt colour "We did not inherit this earth from our parents. We are borrowing it from our children."
JR 137 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Ok so its been around 2 years since a started Karate and i kinda had an accident a while ago and was disabled for about 4 months but now im back into karate. But wouldn't it be time i get to grade? apparently according to a chart I have from my karate school, you only need minimum of 6 weeks in order to attempt grading to get your orange belt. But my instructor says here is the normal instructors standards, and he put his hand near the floor then he said now here are my standards and puts his hand near his head. So i want to get orange belt but I will feel embarrassed to ask for some reason. So what should i do?If you feel you're ready, but he doesn't, you should ask him what you need to improve on. Not from a disrespectful and questioning standpoint, but from a respectful and eager to improve standpoint. Sometimes it's very hard to see our own flaws. The mirrors in the dojo help, but there's nothing like constructive criticism. It's all in the delivery; if you come across as questioning his authority/motives, you won't get anywhere. If you show you want to improve, regardless of the color of some piece of cloth around your waist, you should get some great pointers.Rank is only as good as the person makes it be.
