Proper Execution of Technique

Recommended Posts

Question: What is the proper way to throw a hook punch?

...in my TKD training we focused more of reverse punches, jabs and blocking techniques...I 'm not sure if palms of fist face floor when executed or whether they face you, thumb facing up? (as thrown in boxing)Or whether both are correct?...

It is a matter of personal preference, Deby. I personally have my palm facing to the ground. What is important with the hook is that your arm is behind the punch, in other words that your elbow is high enough. If your elbow is too low, you are slapping more than punching and have a good chance of injuring your wrist. If you elbow is too high, you are slapping with the back of your hand. Also, lead with your hips and shoulder. When you rotate your torso to punch, the last thing to come around should be the punch.. this will develop power from body mechanics and not muscle.

i also throw a mawashi tzuki (hook punch) with my palm facing down, i feel that you can get much more power behind it this way. don't forget to keep your wrist straight however you do it.

Thanks guys...

I was doing the hook correctly then...I do all that you say Ken...but I went to a boxing site and they were throwing the hooks with palms facing. I did that during my class on Monday for a change (fitness Kickboxing) performing front hooks double time to bag in that fashion and now my wrist is KILLING ME (wrist was straight however I do think you tend to bend it somewhat with the momentum and having that palm facing you. With palm facing down you can hit with 1st two knuckles more precisely, which I believe is where you want to.

Thanks...
