Practical Kata Bunkai: The Backflips in Modern Kata

Featured Replies

I don't know about any other styles that use backflips, its something we've been using in Shotokan for a while now. Check out this video and see how you can incorporate them into your bunkai.

What are your thoughts? Do they seem practical? The third one was super simple to do that it made me re-think the "flashier" techniques.

Backflips IMO are something that's done for demonstration rather than actual use, I'd rather use something like a knife hand strike to the neck on the street, than use a backflip

Granted, but obvious you didn't check out the video. Watch it and let me know if your opinion changes. :)

I have never ever heard or met anyone who would claim with a straight face that any kind of flipping or other acrobatics were either practical or applicable as a"bunkai". There is absolutely NO Way! Applied karate is meant to put the attacker down, fast and hard. There is never time for any showboating and attempting anything of the sort is nothing short of suicide. Attack and defense must be one and it must end within 3 moves or less. If a proposed application does not conform to that, all it is good for is the next promotional demo or cheap chopsocky movie

Well said. But if you watch the youtube video I submitted you may gain a new perspective. I'd be very interested to see your take on the subject after you've seen what the video has to say.
