scohen.mma Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Preferably Matsubayashi Ryu, but how similar are Isshin-Ryu and Matsubayashi Ryu? I want to continue Matsubayashi but can't, and I just found an Isshin-Ryu dojo near me. Any thoughts are welcome! Thank you. "Karate doesnt teach me to fight, it teaches me to solve my problems. RJCKarate Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Isshin-ryu is a mix of goju and shorin, so it's similar in some ways, but different in more. Why not go along for yourself and see what that school does? Reece Cummings Kodokan Cummings Karate Dojo 5th Dan, Matsubayashiryu (Shorinryu) Karatedo Kobujutsu 2nd Dan, Yamaneryu Kobudo
Wastelander Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 As a Shorin-Ryu karateka, I find Isshin-Ryu to be quite strange. Not bad, mind you. Just strange. There are some very dedicated, knowledgeable people in Isshin-Ryu, so even though it's going to be significantly different from your Shorin-Ryu, you could benefit from it. Go and try out a class! devil dog Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 They are the same but also very different. Isshin Ryu is Goju Ryu and Shorin Ryu combined. You will find that there are major influences of both. This may be different but you will also find a lot of value in it. The fist for example; Even though my main art is Shorin Ryu I still use the Isshin Ryu fist with the thumb tucked to the side because it strengthens the wrist. There are benifits to every art. Go take a few classes and find out if it's for you. Devil DogGodanShorin ryu, goju ryu, isshin ryu, kobudo.
