You can use Kama pretty much just like swords or sticks. If you really want to get crazy, use Kama that is on a chain, I think it's called Manriki-Kama, now that is getting crazy with it, but I saw it done at a japanese wedding. There are lots of "moves" that you can do, and make up with weapons, but you should get proper instruction.

As for a high class weapon.. hmm.. That's a very subjective question. It wasn't developed as a weapon, but as a farmer's tool, so many would consider it a peasants weapon. What's it matter if it's high class or not, what matters is if you can use it effectively.

I've trained with kamas a little bit. Thy're cool but mostly just for show. I mean when are you gonna be in a fight and find a kama laying around. Back in the day they were effective buth they're not a real modern wepon. They look cool especially when you put them on strings but thats really just for show and more dangerouse to you than anyone i know that for a fact.

you should check out Tadashi Yamashita's instructional videos, me and my instructors do demos sometimes and sometimes Sensei Butch Togisala performs his kama routine. In my opinion he is the MAN when it comes to kama.

Here it is, if you want to know how to use kama I suggest that you go to black and blue video and check out the tapes by Jimmy Pham, Jon Valera, or Mike Chat. They all use them and they all have won world championships with this weapon. In the demonstration department you will need to be able to kick VERY well and you will need to be able to do some basic gymnastic movements to make your performance a great one. The kama are used quite heavily on the NASKA and NBL karate circuits.

Buy a pair of Mike Chat kamas. They are very lightweight with long handles. They are made for demonstration and forms. Then go to black and Blue video and do a search for videos on the kama. I'm sure Mike Chat and John Valera have videos on them.
