Hey guys! So I made a thread few weeks ago about trying Kyokushin Karate and I am loving the training, the people of Kyokushin.

So now I am trying to up my training and I have heard about Hojo Undo long time ago and I have seen them in action. What I am wondering is...How many dojos and different karate styles practice Hojo Undo excercises?

Is Hojo Undo he brain child of Gojiryu Karate? Do you guys do ALL Hojo Undo excercise or some?

It begins with the knowledge that the severity of a strikes impact is amplified by a smaller surface area.

No, hojo undo is not exclusively Goju, although they seem to have popularized it. Many of the Okinawan arts do them.

Think of hojo undo as strength and conditioning training of it's time.

Agreed. :) Also, in the modern sense, Hojo Undo can be any sort of exercise that involves strength training and conditioning. This is especially important for dojos that have limited resources and cannot do the old/traditional Hojo Undo exercises because they don't have the tools (chishi, nagiri, etc) or the knowledge to use them. Modern exercise equipment is a good substitute and accomplishes close to the same thing.

The majority of hojo undo practices found in karate originally came from China and India, and were given an Okinawan flavor over time, as far as I can tell. These methods are present in all Okinawan karate styles, to some degree, but Naha-Te systems (Goju-Ryu and Uechi-Ryu, primarily) make the most use of it, generally. It's really up to the instructor whether or not he/she wants to make use of traditional hojo undo methods.

I've been training in Hojo Undo my entire MA life, it's a staple of Shindokan. Can't imagine my MA life without it.

Hojo undo is not exclusive to Goju Ryu, it is used throughout Okinawan styles of karate. But the thing is Goju Ryu enforcise it as part of it's curriculum

If you believe in an ideal. You don't own it ; it owns you.
