Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They just don't feel natural! I have a belt test in 2 1/2 months and I want to make sure I can do them well.

What should I do to practice them?

A lot more practice. When something feels strange there is only one way to loose that feeling - just keep doing it over and over.

what exactly are you having trouble with. Alot of people at my dojo have a difficult time getting used to the fact they have to roll on their shoulder. They tend to end up rolling on their neck or head, not a good idea. All I can suggest is get lots of pratice on a soft surface (mat, mattriss, whatever you can get a hold of) and don't hesitate or get nervous before the roll, just dive right into it :D

KarateMom.... I am going to move your post over to this area. Actually, many ma styles incorporate "forward rolls in their practice. I know that one of my new bb forms has a forward roll in it.

When we added some Aikido to our classes, I found them difficult at first. My difficulty was staying on the mat. For the life of me I couldn't roll in a straight line!

Practice .... and more practice.

This link may help ya out! http://www.bodymindandmodem.com/KiEx/FrontRoll.html

Good luck on the upcoming belt test!!!

The biggest problem that I have seen with these rolls is that some people approach them like a somersault. Try to angle yourself more when you start so that you roll on your shoulder instead of your head/neck. If this isn't the problem then keep working on them going slowly until you have mastered the motion and then build up speed.

I hope this helps.

I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.

to do a right side shoulder roll..

1)Position your right leg ahead of your left leg.

2)Position your right arm into an arch, a half a meter ahead or your lead foot...(Make sure your palm is facing the ground.)

3)Most importantly, turn your head to the left..(duck a little) By turning your head to the left, you will naturallly go into a shoulder roll..(Just make sure you go in a straight line.)

Stay loose too...REmember, your palm first touches, then your forearm, then triceps, then your right shoulder and so on..

 .... I was trying to put that very same explanation into words koreantiger81 ... but whatever I typed sounded confusing!! :-?

Good job on explaining that tip! By positioning that right arm into an arch ahead of your lead foot it also acts (for me) as an arrow in which to align your body properly in order to roll straight on forward.

Now I am not knowledgeable on the term of this "roll" but when we were performing this forward roll we also had to slam one leg down on mat forcibly while slapping the opposite hand on mat at the same time. Now that took a while for me to get!!
