Hello all, I am new etc.

I was wondering this in the shower- how often do other clubs perform Mokuso at the end/beginning of their training sessions? I thought I was going to be limited by speculation, but then I remembered that I joined this forum and I could ask!

We do it at the beginning and at the end of each class. Even more so when Dai-Soke was alive.

We do it at the beginning and end of belt tests, but not regular classes. Every now and then, I will meditate on my own, but I learned meditation from what most would consider to be an "unusual" source before I ever started training in martial arts.

What is mokuso?
Meditation! It's a great way to prepare at the beginning and unwind at the end. There are some great articles on it online though, I suggest checking them out!

My first school didn't do it period. My Sensei didn't like to do it for religious reasons (we tried to explain that it wasn't religious but he wouldn't hear it).

Martial arts training is 30% classroom training, 70% solo training.

Oh cool thanks. :)

We start every class with a few minutes of meditation. It's terrific.

It's a part of bowing in and out of each class. Good (albeit short) pause to clear the mind before starting and reflect on what we've learned at the end.

Mizu No Kokoro: Mind like the water

Tsuki No Kokoro: Mind like the moon

Calming of the mind before and after, imho, is a very good thing. These maxims apply to everything in ones MA training.

We do it at the end of our lessons at my instructors club but at my own club we perform some qigong breathing exercises instead to help balance the lesson out.

I like this answer!! Am I the first to say that he needs I write a book???

We do it at the bow in and bow out. At my first school I thought it wAs strange at first. I was having a hard time keeping me eyes closed, waiting for the hokey thing to be over. After a short time at became something very different.

It equalizes the mind, prepares it for training. It's when training actually starts. It creates (for me) the continuity between sessions. It's sort of like the training light was switched off until that moment, then work, school, stress vanishes and you are ready
