If you're not making mistakes, you're not learning! The good news is that you are recognizing them. That's the first step towards fixing them!

My most common mistake is when I'm asked to apply certain techniques, usually in 1 step applications, but instead, I do what feels natural. My Sensei always says "It's never wrong if the technique works", but I get down on myself because I want to do what I'm asked to do in that situation.

I think by letting your instructors know that you recognize the mistakes, you'll gain their respect. But be sure you're working on correcting them!

Welcome to the forum, Iskrax!

Don't worry about making mistakes--you've been training for 9 months, so no one expects you to be perfect! Honestly, I've been training for nearly 8 years, and I still make mistakes. When an instructor is watching you, and you make a mistake, it is simply something to correct and move on. They don't dwell on it or think that someone is terrible just for that.

Karate is a lifelong pursuit, so you have lots of time to fix your mistakes :)

And from:

Mistakes are all apart of learning. Your new to the arts and you will make mistakes.

I have been training for 30+ years and still make mistakes. It happens.

The trick is to learn from your mistakes and become better for it.

Absolutely! :) Great posts

And finally:

I make mistakes all the time; most people do. To err is human....

...

To really foul up...requires a computer! :P

Welcome to KF!

Like everyone else has mentioned, you're new, and you're going to mess up. The thing that you need to know is that everyone messes up! Even your Sensei! To err is human, and we are all human. Don't be dispirited because we have all been there.

I love karate and would never give up on it

To me, this is the most important thing that you have said. Keep the love and you will excel! Practice daily and get better! If you're insecure about a technique then talk to your instructor! That's what they're there for and they want to watch you grow as much as us!

Wrong spirit,

Please expound on this.

Thanks

I think that they mean intensity in this case.

I have 2 students who struggle to learn new stuff and are really hard on themselves, i give them extra help and encouragement in training. One has pushed through and is now doing really well, the other has skipped training and regularly gets annoyed at themself and sits out rather than just relaxing and doing it again and again, they are still struggling....

When i see mistakes i say this is why we train, try again but i also make plenty.

Any advices? If any Sensei is reading this what do you think about the students who mess up techniques ?

Well, if I went through a training session without it's share of mistakes I would either

- realize I'm in a dream - I saw the movie "Inception" yesterday :-)

or

- fear that my students have been replaced by extraterrestrial clones.

A common reason for students to get discouraged is when they can't seem to remember a kata. And I remind them that in old Japan, a student wasn't allowed to start on a new kata until he had practiced one for 3 years. Usually, that puts it in perspective for them!

After you remind them, what's their usual response, both facial and otherwise?

Everybody makes mistakes, it's how we learn. I make mistakes in every class, whether it's forgetting the next move in a kata (I'm learning Kushanku just now, so it happens a lot :D ) or stances are not quite right. Nobody is laughing at you, everyone else in the class has probably made the exact same mistakes. Don't overthink things, relax and you'll start to make less mistakes over time. If you go into a class thinking "what mistakes will I make tonight?" then you're not concentrating fully on the techniques themselves, and mistakes will flow. Relax and let your Karate flow, and if you do make a mistake just shake it off and start over.
