Your ideal student

Recommended Posts

For those that teach (and also those that don't):

Describe your ideal student. What qualities would they have?

I'm pretty general here, I just want to see a student who wants to learn the material. After that I can teach them anything else (such as respect and humbleness etc.).

Martial arts training is 30% classroom training, 70% solo training.

Well, if we're talking about "ideal," then I suppose they would be:

Humble

Patient

Interested in martial arts

Mid- to late-teens in age

Healthy and fit

Talented in physical movement

In reality, though, I'm thrilled any time I get the first three things in that list :)

Mine would be one that empties his/her cup at the door every time s/he comes to class, and then proceeds to give everything s/he has every class.

That's about it for me...

Great responses thus far :)

Here's a follow up question:

Taking a look at these two qualities: physically gifted vs enthusiasm

What ratio of each would your perfect student have?

You've got 100% to allocate between the two. Would you want 50% enthusiasm 50% physical ability? Or maybe 60:40? 25:75? or maybe even 99% of one of those traits and only 1% of the other?
