Given enough time, any man may master the physical. With enough knowledge, any man may become wise. It is the true warrior who can master both....and surpass the result.

I am a Wado-ka.

Wado Ryu means "The way of peace/harmony". It's a nice art. It's a blend of Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu, Okinawan Karate Do, and it has some Aikido influence as well. It's very defense and practical in nature. Stances are generally a little bit shorter than those of Shotokan Karate.

It's graceful in nature and stresses relaxation when performing techniques.

It's beautiful to watch when a seasoned Wado-ka performs kata.

A very comprehensive website to check out concerning Wado Ryu :

I would add http://www.wadoworld.com .

there is a Welsh Wadoka with Kata videos on his page, do a web search for "wado kata," and you'll find it.

Cecil Paterson's site,a s mentioned above is good. David Deaton, from Nashville has a series of videotapes out that haev the major Kata on them, alshtough he is not doing "orthodox" Wado technique. Dragon Tsunami has a series out with Ajari Sensei that also have the advantage of showing footage of Otsuka Sensi shot in the later 1960s. These are better.

I've seen the video footage of Otsuka Sensei. WOW! It is awesome to watch! Very graceful man. His son is the same way (even though his legs are like tree trunks:)

I was fortunate enough to attend a seminar with Ohtsuka II Sensei in London in the earl 1990s, and was floored with his grace, focus, and power. In my next life I will move like that!

That's awesome man!! I too attended a seminar of Otsuka II a few years ago in Nashville. It was amazing how he would communicate his thoughts/principles/ideas etc. The interpterter (his son) was great too, but when the Master spoke and moved...nothing else needed to be said. It was great. He walked by one of the lines and touched my shoulder in passing and nodded his head.

Incidentally, a freind of mine who is a journalist was able to conduct and video tape an hour long interview with Hironori Otsuka II in his hotel room while he stayed in Nashville. Oh man, the topics that were covered. Everything from his father, training, the future of wado. His thoughts concerning "western" wado-ka and japanese wado-ka were very eye opening. A very nice man. Quick as lightening too.
