I passed my 3rd Kyu test in MO kobudo today.

In the syllabus I only have to learn one more weapon - the iyeku (boat oar).

This gives me the freedon to use other Okinawan weapons.....any suggestions?

I have a list, but I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas.

(Pretty pointless post I know :P)

.... absolutely not pointless, it gives me the opportunity to offer you congrats Tobias.

And since I have no knowledge of weapons or Matayoshi Okinawan Kobudo for that matter, I have no ideas I'm sorry to say.

But I am sure you will get some opinions ....

Tobias congrats. Do you do Kobudo exclusively now? Is it just weapons or a system that incorporates weapons? You may want to list the weapons as some of us probably do not know what is available to you.

Your post has piqued my interest. So it's not so pointless. 8)

Red J kobudo is just weapons. Congrats Tobias, the eku is a very cool weapon to use I enjoy it very much. As for other weapons I do not know what weapons you already use. I would train in the bokken(wooden sword) if your school offers it, not really a traditional okinawan weapon. My school offers Iaido in our kobudo program so we use the bokken followed by the katana. I also really enjoy using the jo (4 foot staff). If I remember correctly you already know the tonga, nunchuk, and kama. If you havent done one of those I suggest that, and I am almost certain you must have used the bo. My favorite weapon is the tongfa, I love swirling them around. :D

Yes, I do Kobudo exclusively - seperate grades, seperate instruction etc.

In my association there are 13 weapons that are used:

Rokushaku bo

Nunchaku

Sai

Tsun kuwa/tonfa

Kama

Iyeku

^The above are the 'basic' weapons used (in order) up to black belt.

After black belt, the following weapons are available:

Tekko

Timbe/Timbe Rochin

Nunti

Suruchin

Kuwa

Tettchu

Please bear in mind that I will be self-taught with these weapons, and am not looking into grading with them.

I'm not planning on taking up the sword/katana, but instead a more original weapon.

If there are any queries about the weapons, I'm sure Leaf, SaiFightsMS and myself will be happy to answer.

hmmmmmm.....maybe a poll could be used....

Is there any particular reason why you don't want to take up the katana or maybe bokken??

- Only by contrast can we see.

- Each for his own.

Well, since I'm not of Japanese decent, and train in the Korean arts, my first question would be what the heck are those less well known weapons you just listed (in English)?
