Lineage

Recommended Posts

Lineage - IMO is the next link in the chain. To Acknowledge those who came before us - Respect. That being said - we must develop ourselves to uphold that Lineage. We must not only carry on and respect our Lineage - but must uphold and carry on the Skills of the Lineage. Anyway just my 3 cents.

Gotta love it when websites allow you to be a little lazy.

Martial arts training is 30% classroom training, 70% solo training.

In my opinion, lineage is very important, but primarily in defining your style. Sure, you do Shorin Ryu, but is it Matsubayashi or Kobayashi? Is your Kenpo EPAK or Tracy? Sometimes, the differences are trivial, but sometimes they're not.

Also, a sense of your style's history can enhance your appreciation of the art. Some people only care that it works, but many want to know why it works, or how it developed, or in what ways it's similar to or different from other styles. Lineage can help reveal such things.

Lineage can be important, or irrelevant. That's the problem with it.

This is mine for what it's worth.

I'm not really sure how I feel about lineages I know they're important but I don't believe them to be the end all be all of what you study, if it works it works it doesn't matter who you learned it from. That being said this is kind of fun so I will list the lineages I am aware of:

Jeet Kune Do:

Bruce Lee

Dan Inosanto

Paul Vunak

Harinder Singh

Jason Herrera

I was also lucky enough to study Aikido for a little bit, no where near as long as I would like but:

Morihei Ueshiba

Yoshimitsu Yamada

Wee Wow Dumlao

As my path has split from my original lineage, I have a few lineage lists. Because I practice Matsubayashi-Ryu, rather than list the entire lineage back to Tode Sakugawa and others, I stop at Shoshin Nagamine, with his lineage implied.

My Former Karate Lineage:

Shoshin Nagamine

Ansei Ueshiro

Gary Tiktin

My CI's Instructor

My Current Karate Lineage:

Shoshin Nagamine

Takayoshi Nagamine

I have had the pleasure of training with other instructors as well and training under many masters (Koyama, Okizaki, Tanaka, Ueki, Takashina, ext) but this is the closest to a lineage tree I can get.

Kensei- my Sensei also trained with Okazaki in Philadelphia. It must have been an honor to train with a direct student of Master Funakoshi!
