diamondick Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 Has anyone used this weapon, is it practical for combat?
ZR440 Posted September 30, 2002 Posted September 30, 2002 I seen a female use one in a video and it was awesome. Would not want to get hit with it. But, where to find an instructor might be the real question. It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
fungku Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 Yeah, it would be very practical for combat, if you knew how to use it and had space to. It wouldn't be practical to carry it around with you either if you wanted it for self defence. You would also have to find a good instructor, but that's a pretty slim chance. I probably saw the same video with the girl using it, she was pretty good, but check out the guy in Jet Li's first movie - The Shaolin Temple, he was awesome. I myself have a 9 section whip-chain, and was trying to learn on my own, and it's very difficult, I can do some neat stuff, but I wouldn't use it in combat yet. I have weapons background with sword, nuchaku and staff. And I practice with an extension cord before trying anything with the real thing, since I don't feel like dying or crippling myself. Visit Shaolin, Chinese Martial Arts - I don't fear the 10,000 techniques you've practised once, I fear the one technique you've practiced 10,000 times. -
Synaesthesia Posted December 29, 2002 Posted December 29, 2002 The 9 section chain whip is very hard to master. It is, however, a very effective weapon (illegal where i live). One of the most interesting moves with it is done by getting it moving, hooking it around your elbow and letting it snap straight out, accelerating with the unfolding of each section. When the steel spike at the end whips straight out, it's going fast enough to penetrate concrete blocks or numb skulls. The most difficult thing about it is controlling it after a strike, it takes many hours of practice. Funku is right, practice with something easier (although the feel is quite different). I've come close to brokeaking my fingers with a careless move.
