Shaolin Fighter
Has anybody here haved studied Eagle claw kung-fu? If so do you like it and is it a good means of self-defense? Are there any joint locking techniques and if so are they realistic in today's world? I'm just trying to find out some info before I study this art. Thankyou in advance.... Shaolin
Haven't studied Eagle Claw but yes, I think it is a good system as the 'hard' styles go (I believe it is hard.) Although I wouldn't trade it for Wing Chun I think that is offers a very interesting and useful set of tools including strikes, nerve, limb destructions and locks along with a myriad of other tools - a cool system. The key for style sucsess is likely to be the same as in most Chinese arts find the best Sifu you can and check his/her lineage. I believe that Grandmaster Lily Lau is the rightful leader of the Eagle Claw system and she would be a good starting point for any sifu search: http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=63 Also a history: http://home.pacbell.net/pbwriter/writing/eaglclaw.html Good luck, Jim Moy Yat Ving Tsun Rest in peace: Moy Yat Sifu
fungku
I also have not trained eagle claw, but I train Chin Na, seperately, it uses many Eagle Claw, Long Fist, and White Crane techniques. I think Eagle Claw would be a very powerful art with Chin Na. A poetry line from Eagle Claw, translated to English: "Grab the joint: twist." Eagle Claw students know from this, that every time they grab a joint such as a wrist - they twist it to cause the opponent pain. If you want my opinion I think Eagle Claw would be a very practical martial art to take. Visit Shaolin, Chinese Martial Arts - I don't fear the 10,000 techniques you've practised once, I fear the one technique you've practiced 10,000 times. -
