andym Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Are you in US or in GB ? I ask as the Isshin in the US, is of Okinawan origin : Kata and Bunkai based training, along with Kobudo. Here in GB, it's a free style sports system, developed by 'Ticky' Donovan, more free sparring based. Both have good reputations though. They styles within the art of Karate. TKD is an art, like Karate, sub-divided in organisations and styles. Sorry to seem negative, but TKD has the largest disparity of quality within an art that I have come across. Some are brilliant within a style and some - within that same style - are very poor. So you need to look at the TKD schools on an individual basis. I've found this to the case, both here in GB, and on my visits to the US.Sorry forgot to add, welcome to the forum. If you believe in an ideal. You don't own it ; it owns you.
Matt123 Posted December 9, 2013 Author Posted December 9, 2013 No, they actually don't do any sparring there at all. I have also looked into a krav maga gym nearby. I am really considering giving the isshin ryu a shot over all the other though. Any thoughts?
guird Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 No sparring is a bad idea. It's not a sure sign of a bad school, but it's pretty close. Krav maga is brutal, If pure adrenaline is your idea of a good time, it's definitely worth training in even if it's just for the ability to cope with fear and utilise agression. make sure you get a good school though, there are plenty of schools that would make israeli soldiers cringe.

Matt123 Posted January 11, 2014 Author Posted January 11, 2014 Still have not joined anywhere. My lower back has a lot of issues and goes out suddenly and now more and more often. This is what is keeping me from signing a year long commitment. Does anyone here have back issues and if so is there any advice on staying healthy? This is a very annoying issue to keep running into. Thanks.

Matt123 Posted January 12, 2014 Author Posted January 12, 2014 To be completely honest I stretch every day. I do have 2 herniated discs and I don't know if the stretching will overcome this. Its very frustrating to feel great and want to start, then I pick up my daughter and bamm, on one knee.
sensei8 Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 What has your doctor directed you to do?? His/her advice is above all, especially mine!! **Proof is on the floor!!!
