karate_woman Posted April 16, 2003 Posted April 16, 2003 Interesting. I don't take Muay Thai but would have guessed it would take a lot longer than 6 months to learn, but maybe I'm defining "learn" differently....as in becoming a good Muay Thai fighter; the poster did mention self defense, which is probably different than actually being a good Muay Thai fighter. In the vein of self defense, what is your goal? The best defense is avoidance (yes, even if you've trained in martial arts); if you can't avoid/diffuse the situation and have to fight, don't underestimate your opponent. Just because you can give and take a few hits doesn't mean you should go looking for trouble. Anyway. Now I've said my piece, I'll defer to the Muay Thai experts now, who will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong in assuming it takes longer than 6 months to be a good Muay Thai fighter The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. -Lao-Tse
TJS Posted April 16, 2003 Posted April 16, 2003 yes it does take more than 6 months to be a "good" MT Fighter ...the diffrence is that after 6 months in Muay Thai you will proabably be able to hold you own pretty well especially against a normal person. SO basically while you are far from a "master" you can simply apply more quickly.
Ghost Posted April 16, 2003 Posted April 16, 2003 Yeah you can get the basics down in 6 months but the real stuff takes time.
King of Fighters Posted April 17, 2003 Posted April 17, 2003 I think that Muay thai is a pretty effictive style. Some people say that we dont learn any defence things but this is not true, at my school we learn some self defence stuff and attacks that you would use in the street, but it doesnt focus as much on that aspect as other martial arts (like kung fu or krav maga) do. As for learning muay thai, it doesnt take very long to learn how to use it effictivly. Ive been taking it for about a year and i pretty much all the attacks and how to use them, but there is stil learning how to put all of them together and timing work and stuff like that.
Synaesthesia Posted April 17, 2003 Posted April 17, 2003 I started Muay Thai close to a month ago and I've noticed a dramatic improvement in my physical condition. If you're trying to whip yourself into decent shape it can happen very fast with muay thai's emphasis on power and endurance. In fact, I suspect the first few months see some of the most dramatic improvement if you are willing to push yourself hard. It's not hard to look something like a muay thai fighter within a couple of months, but being able to take one on in a fight is a different matter all together.
martialartist1 Posted April 28, 2003 Posted April 28, 2003 if you wana learn self -defense then kungfu is the better choice, but muay thai is effective too aslong as you know how to use it for the purposes. you can become an great effective fighter within 1 year of proper intense training if you learn Muay thai, but you would benefit more in kungfu when your specialising more in self-defense. It also depends on how fast and willing the martial artists wants to learn and train. The greatest fighters have over 2 years and would always train forever.
TJS Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 why would kung fu be a better choice for self defense than MT? and specific reasoning?
