Thank you all for the responses, especially CreDoTe - you've given a lot of time. If the new job comes to fruition I'll be moving and switching styles. You've eased a bit of my insecurity, for now I'll keep training and try to move on with as much fitness, flexibility overall as I can.

All the comments I enjoyed. I am Shotokan to Shorin -ryu (Matsumura).

I agree stances are more realistic in Shorin-ryu. But the deep Shotokan is largely for training uses to strengthen the legs, not meant for free sparring

or the street. We sparred with much higher stances. We weren't conditioned into deep stances for fighting at all. This was just the training. JKA
