origami_07 Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 ...and which style emphasizes on full contact kumite ? I'm pretty stuck on choosing two dojos. One teaches Wado and the other is Chito.
sensei8 Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Imho,The only way to truly find the answers to any of your questions and concerns is to visit both schools and speak with the sensei and see for yourself. Good luck and please, let us know what style you finally decide on. **Proof is on the floor!!!
lowereastside Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Going on memory- Wado Karate was founded in the 1930's by H. Otsuka - Combining Ju-Jitsu and G. Funakoshi's Karate based on Shuri-te (Shorin-ryu - Shotokan ).Chito-ryu Karate was founded after WW2 by T. Chitose combining Shuri-te ( Shorin-ryu ) and Naha-te ( Goju-Ryu ) that he studied in Okinawa. When Chitose arrived on the mainland ( Japan ) some say he also received instruction from G. Funakoshi. Do a Googles search - to get a lot more details of the History - Katas - ........ And like Sensei8 say's visit the schools and speak to the teacher's. Good Luck.
Kusotare Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 ...and which style emphasizes on full contact kumite ? I'm pretty stuck on choosing two dojos. One teaches Wado and the other is Chito. The level of contact has more to do with the individual dojo rather than the style.I don't know enough about Chito-ryu to comment, but Wado is a very good style.Be careful about connecting it to Jujutsu! It has techniques within its system, but probably nothing like the Jujutsu you have in your head.It is however hard to learn well and takes a lot of mental weight lifting!!!I know the head instructor at the Calgary Wado club you posted. I have trained alongside him (Barry) and his wife Nicole many times and they are both first class martial artists. They understand Wado and how it works. You would be in very good hands. K. Usque ad mortem bibendum!

K.Appreciate it. I'm a bit picky when it comes to picking a teacher. I've heard some great things about Barry and Nicole's dojo and your response makes me feel more assured that they're great teachers.
RAM18 Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 I practice Wado and we do semi contact kumite. Saying that taking a reverse punch to the stomach will make you think twice about leaving it unguarded!Wado Ryu is a lot about agility, deception and evasiveness. Being quick on your feet and maximizing you movement to counter attacks rather than some of the more direct strong styles. That which does not kill us, must have missed us.- Miowara Tomoka
