skullsplitter Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 So my son is moving away from his light weight bo and the creative/extreme stuff to focus more on traditional bo (YAY!). He likes the look of both purple heart and yellow heart for the wood. I've found a lot of info on purple heart, but not much about yellow heart.Does any one here have any experience with yellow heart wood for weapons? Crane Mountain tells me it's a bit lighter than purple heart, but didn't have a lot of info on how durable it is.
Wastelander Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 The Wood Database is a great place to look, in my opinion--it's where I looked up information for my custom bo when I decided on an octagonal 6'6" bo made of Ipe.Purpleheart:http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/purpleheart/Yellowheart:http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/yellowheart/For bo durability, I go by the Janka Hardness, which is basically a measure of how hard it is to dent the wood. For hitting two sticks together, you want something that isn't going to dent easily, because that weakens the fibers of the wood and leads to chipping and breaking. Purpleheart has a rating of about 2300, while Yellowheart is at about 1700. By comparison, the Ipe my bo is made of is rated around 3600, and I have still managed to dent it. That said, my bo has broken three non-tapered oak bo so far Kishimoto-Di | 2014-Present | Sensei: Ulf KarlssonShorin-Ryu/Shinkoten Karate | 2010-Present: Yondan, Renshi | Sensei: Richard Poage (RIP), Jeff Allred (RIP)Shuri-Ryu | 2006-2010: Sankyu | Sensei: Joey Johnston, Joe Walker (RIP)Judo | 2007-2010: Gokyu | Sensei: Joe Walker (RIP), Ramon Rivera (RIP), Adrian RiveraIllinois Practical Karate | International Neoclassical Karate Kobudo Society
