Hi Just looking for some help/advice before we go back to the club....

My husband gained his 2nd dan black belt some 20 years ago at the time he had been very dedicated for a lot of years. Life moved on he stopped going as you do sometimes, he's the grand old age of 47 now with a 6 year old son, he started him going to Karate just before his 5th Birthday and he is now orange belt Shokotan. The classes run twice weekly and my husband trains (more just for fun) with his son. However one of the classes will be closing at the end of August and as they need to get two lesons in weekly for the grading they have asked my husband if he will help run the class! Now we cant find his licence is there anything like a registry office where we can apply for a duplicate does anyone know?

Thanks in advance

Janey

The organization that he graded under should be able to help. So far as I know, they all keep records of any advancement of note. Do you know which one he earned the black belt in?

Hi Janey,

Why do you need to find the license?

The association he is with now can give him a new one.

It's more about if the new organisation will be happy to recognise his grade, but seriously if he's had a 20 year break then is he ready to go and teach, is the syllabus the same, has he trained enough lately to regain his speed and agility?

As a parent then it might be good for the second lesson to be kept alive but will they be at a good standard?

He trained in Shukokai and my son is doing Shokotan, it wasn't something he has volunteered for they have really played the emotional blackmail card - your son will only be able to grade every 6m rather than 3m unless you help run a second class. He has been told he will be able to take the black belt in Shokotan if he produces his license and he wont be running the class alone. He's kept really fit and has been competing in MMA fights so its not as if he has been sat on his bum for 20 years, his own style is still as natural to him as it was back in the day. We have been searching the house and just cant find this bloomin license now and it a bit embarrassing lol!

Thanks for your replies.

ps As for his old club his instructor has now passed away so the club no longer exists!

Threatening your kid with reduced promotion opportunities seems hardcore shady. Unless you mean that they won't have enough teaching staff to do it more often than that unless he helps? In either case if your husband is into mma then why not find a place to train that is less of a hassle?

As it was said before try contacting organisation that gave him his belt. If you cant remember what organisation was that, try finding people that trained with your husband.

A style is just a name.

Again, as many here have already mentioned...contact the governing body!! Hopefully, your husbands sensei filed anything and everything with the governing body because sensei's and the like pass away, but for the most, not always, governing bodies don't.

Yes, contact the Shukokai org, and see if they have anything on file. Barring that, if they feel comfortable enough to ask, then they should be able to come up with something for him.

I do agree with what was said above about guilting him into teaching for his son's sake. Will everyone else be required the same?
