muttley Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I have just started to learn this kata. It's the first new kata I have tried to learn since I went through Ji'in many, many years ago!I am finding it hard to grasp this kata, the mix of hard and soft I just can't get into my head! From what I have learnt so far, it's a lovely kata, just wish I could get it mastered.
pittbullJudoka Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 It is a nice kata. We were working this during my last promotion while the seniors decided out fate and talked to each person who tested. I couldn't get it with this one either. But the one teaching us this kata allowed me to video it. Some day I'll start putting it together. Just wondering what rank it this kata normally taught in your system?
muttley Posted June 12, 2013 Author Posted June 12, 2013 It is getting talked about as a black belt kata, quick look at the KUGB grading syllabus, it's a 2nd-3rd dan kata!
Wastelander Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 My instructor requires his students to know every kata in our system before he will even test them for shodan. Our Gojushiho tends to be taught somewhere around 3rd or 2nd kyu, typically. It's a very awkward kata, for me, so i feel your pain. Wastelander Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 How many kata are in your system? Not sure if you were asking me or the OP. In my system we have a total of 19, which is way too many, in my opinion. This is the list of kata, in the order they are typically taught in my system:Kihon IpponKihon NihonKihon SanbonFukyuu no KataNaihanchi ShodanNaihanchi NidanNaihanchi SandanPinan ShodanPinan NidanPinan SandanPinan YondanPinan GodanPassai ShoPassai DaiKusanku ShoChintoKusanku DaiGojushihoGorin Kishimoto-Di | 2014-Present | Sensei: Ulf KarlssonShorin-Ryu/Shinkoten Karate | 2010-Present: Yondan, Renshi | Sensei: Richard Poage (RIP), Jeff Allred (RIP)Shuri-Ryu | 2006-2010: Sankyu | Sensei: Joey Johnston, Joe Walker (RIP)Judo | 2007-2010: Gokyu | Sensei: Joe Walker (RIP), Ramon Rivera (RIP), Adrian RiveraIllinois Practical Karate | International Neoclassical Karate Kobudo Society
