I noticed that there are quite a bunch of these.

It seems like every master broke off and made their own. Is there one that is considered the most legitimate? Are there ones to stay away from?

My teacher is sticking with the one his teacher belongs to, as loyalty is more important to him then anything.

I would like to hear opinions.

Thanks

I'm not a Goju practitioner/karateka, but imho, the IOGKF, headed by Morio Higaonna Sensei, is one of the most "legitimate" governing bodies in Goju.

As far as which Goju governing body should one avoid, well, that's up to so many parameters as well as to what ones looking for within that persons interpretations across the board.

Imho!!

Which governing body is your teacher belong to?

trying to understand this is nuts.

From what my sensei told me, Morio Higaonna is really a top goju guy. He tells me watching is is watching someone doing it properly and fully respects him. He's a beast.

My sensei went to Japan and trained with Eichi Miyazato when he was alive at the jundokan, at that time he was a top goju guy getting the system from Chojun Miyagi. He also trained with Taira Sensei there.

At some point Higaonna and Taira left the Jundokan (separately) and formed their own organziations and the person who took over when Miyazatos was very young and unqualified. The old guys who were on the board of \of Miyazatos jundokan werent happy and formed their own. Thats the one he belongs to.

If anyone knows about this stuff I wouldn't mind being corrected.

This is the organization he (we) belongs to

My instructor, John Roseberry is the head of his own organization, he studied under Seikichi Toguchi while stationed in the orient. And opened his dojo in 1972.

Don't try to understand the internal politics of Goju Ryu, it will 'do your head in'. I wrote the following elsewhere last year.

Interesting , I study Goju Ryu Karate-Do and it's most famous Dojo is the Jundokan. Strangely, it is not run by the most famous personality within Goju Ryu , this is Morio Higaonna (10th Dan). Sensei Higaonna is the most famous instructor, with the largest world wide Goju Ryu organisation the I.O.G.K.F. He was a pupil of the Jundokan, but was chased out in the 1970's. Teruo Chinen, the Sensei of my own teacher, Tony Christian, was also chased out in the early 1990's. So he founded Jundokan International in America as a result. Now Masaji Taira , one the most active instructors at the Jundokan and a man credited with being the best Bunkai man in Goju Ryu has also been chased out, why ?

Now I have nothing to do with the politics of the martial arts, in fact I avoid it like the plague. But , it seems to me that chasing the best guy out of your Dojo is a little odd. It's also be counter-productive to the promotion and development of the Jundokan , and they've done it three times now ! Please tell me it's not just petty jealousy that's behind it all ? I'm independent , not involved with any of these organisations , so I've no axe to grind or personality to promote, I just find it strangely sad.

My view on for this, is that Goju focuses on creating strong characters with a lot of self-belief who are prepared to go there own way, and do so on a regular basis.

If you believe in an ideal. You don't own it ; it owns you.

Or, you could say,

'Goju-ka specialise in in-fighting.'
