I agree. My first dojo used Century heavyweights (which are really medium weight) gi for beginners, and the things are just pathetic! Asian World fo MA's "proforce" brand makes an affordable line of heavyweight gi, and KI also makes good, inexpensive heavyweights.

How can you like tokaido hobbitbob? The GIs have not been updated or redesigned since the old man died! Plus they are too expensive!!!

 

Ive also seen them wear rather quickly.

 

In Karate uniforms are constantly being Designed and redesigned.

 

Adidas is putting out a new line every year supposedly *its about time*

 

Most ISKF/JKA guys still wear tokaidos, but personally i cant stand them

Hmm a good gi. Hard to find. I've got one that was tailored for me. It's from cotton, i don't stant any "polyesters" and I look like a princess in it

 

I'll have to buy another but I gues it won't look that good.

 

KickChick said they have to put patches with thei school signs on it. We here "stand" only the manufacturer's patch. In this part of Europe shotokan practitioners have got to keep their gis clean of any badges or patches. Plain white.

I've had a Satori gi for about 3 months now, and I think it is one of the best gi's I've ever owned. It is costume tailored to me so it fits nice. I have the 12oz. version of the American, I believe, and it's plenty heavy, but not too heavy.

 

The jacket has the 3/4 sleeves, but the pants are at ankle length. After several washings, the length of the pants shrank to where it was suppose to, which was to my ankles.

 

The jacket has extra material in the arm pit area so that there is no binding during your movements, and the jacket dosen't pull up when you raise your arms above your head.

I've had several peers who wore "Anshin" gi, but I'm not sure if teh company still exists. I think they are in New Hampshire, somewhere.

 

On the Adidas: I like the older Adidas heavyweight "karate Gi," exept for teh skunk cabbage logo on teh right breast and right leg. They were affordable, being in teh $100.00 range. The new Adidas gis are lightweight, with the same stupid corduroy fabric as the TKD suits, adn cost twice as much. Lets hear it for the olympicization of Karate! I haev heard a rumour that these are to be the only gis allowed at WKF competitons!

 

I am currently using two Tokaidos and a Meijin. I will probably replace the Tokkaidos with meijins as time goes by. The MEijis is sooo wonderful, I can't begin to say enough!

 

Had a Shureido for a while, but it didn't make the trip back to the states from Germany. It was in teh same box as my TV and Stereo, adn was pilfered along with every thing else in the box. Thank you DoD approved moving companies!

If the Meijin came in black, I'd wear that gi too. It's a well designed gi!!!

What kind of gi you ware is a very personal thing and you shuold really look into what your buying if your going to buy a really expencive gi. It is hard to see the quality of a gi in a cataloge so I like the see what I'm buying in real life before I get it.

 

I have owned many gi's from very light to very heavy cotton and I say the heavyer the better my current gi could be compared to a truck tarp, its 20 oz cotton and I love it, it just maks you work harder for every technique. The only problem is that it's not a very high quality gi (well I didn't pay much for it) so I'm currently looking for another but I'm finding it hard to find places whithin Australia that sell very heavy high quality gi's.
