Since returning to training, I have got to transfer my grade to the KUGB as I achieved it at a non-KUGB affiliated club.

Having looked at the syllabus, it's all pretty straight forward (I think), but the kata is where I am coming stuck. The syllabus states I have to do Bassai Dai as well as either Tekki Shodan or any Heian kata. I LOVE Tekki Shodan, but feel maybe I should do Godan or Yondan instead.

What are the thoughts on this? Also, will consideration be made for slight variations in the kata as I have noticed slight changes in the way Bassai is performed.

You would probably get the answers you need by consulting with the technical director or other such titled person within the KUGB. Bring your concerns to them, and see what they have to say. If they can be approached, that is. Is there a number you could contact them at, or perhaps send and email voicing your questions?

Sorry, like Brian says, for a definitive answer, it's probably best to ask the KUGB directly. Is this a retest then?

Yeah something like that, basically I sat my initial Dan grade with what was the EKGB, now training and licensed to KUGB so they need to grade me to make sure I am of Dan grade calibre I guess.

Ask to train with them for several lessons before the grading to ensure you iron out any slight variations in Kata and you can get to know the syllabus including Kumite.

As for Kata - be prepared to do them ALL at the best of your ability.

If you successfully complete your combinations, bassai dai, ju ippon and ju kumite then you'll be asked to step forward and will be given a final kata, either a heian or tekki shodan. You won't get a choice.
