Harkon72 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Does anyone here use Tonfa?I have had a little windfall and fancy buying a pair. Some traditional square ones look good from Nine Circles. A new Project, mmm... Look to the far mountain and see all.
Harlan Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I finally bought a pair from Crane Mountain. Didn't really know what I wanted, and was sorry in the end as I hadn't really had my hands on enough tonfa to be sure of what I liked.Given a second chance, I'd avoid Purpleheart/heavy wood, stick with oak, measure my hands/grip and then order a bit bigger handle, and go with the 'torpedo' style with flat side on the arm. Leaves fall.
lowereastside Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 I have a Pair of Chinese ( Tonfa ) - It is pronounced Guai/Guau in Chinese. I think the Chinese Tonfa - Crutch is longer in length than the Okinawan/JapaneseTonfa.
sensei8 Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Love the tonfa, and I've quite a little collection of different types. A very effective little tool!! **Proof is on the floor!!!
Kuma Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I have a pair and enjoy using them from time to time. I'm not much of a kobudo guy but I do like the tonfa best out of all of them.
Harlan Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Given a choice, I'd personally spend my $$$ on something I can't manufacture myself. Sai, for example. I'm definitely making my own tonfa the next time around. Tonfa, chisi, nunchaku, sansetsukon, bokken...one can really make them one's self. Bo, 6 ft and tapered...not so much. Leaves fall.
AngelAriz Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I used to love the tonfa from my old Koga days. I havent had a set in years. No limits as my limit.
Bryan Sensei Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Although I've trained with almost of all the Kobudo weapons and own most of them I'd say the tonfa is one of my 3rd favorite .My 2 favorite traditional weapons would have to be the Bo and the Sai.The Bo because it's the most realistic in terms of it being legal to carry on the streets, because you can pickup a broom or a stick of any sort and excute the same techniques.I like the Sai because it's quick and very effective when applied correctly .The Tonfa I would say is my 3rd favorite ,because it's techniques are useful when applied using the police or security baton.I buy mostly Shureido brand Kobudo weapons ,because of their high quality and crafesmanship. There's no such word as can't.
