Lazybudoguy
I have been searching around the internet about Shorinji ryu and have not found much about this style. I understand it is related to Shorin ryu but different. Can anyone state the differences or particulars about Shorinji Ryu? I understand this is a broad question but I am curious to find any details. My style I am learning is Kongo Zen Shorinji Ryu Son Ryu. It is not related to Shorinji Kempo at all. I have been researching this particular style and have not found anything like it so far. The head of this style is Reverend Yoshio Murasaki in Oahu. There are three locations, one in Oahu and two on the Big Island. Stylistically it looks very different. In Zenkutsu dachi (and all other stances) the front foot is not straight but heel pointed out. And there is also a large emphasis on the punch originating from the rolling of the tanden(Or koshi i think). Does anyone practice a similiar style? Thanks! MasterPain
Sounds like the stances are worried about center-line and groin kicks. I'd bet there are some low blows in the offense of the style. Hip torque is a good basis for power generation in most styles. My fists bleed death. -Akuma
Harkon72
I practiced Shorin Ryu in my early martial arts career. I found it a good prelude to Shotokan, my Sensei called the basic Kata by the Shotokan term "Heian". I don't know if I can help, but I will have a look for you. Look to the far mountain and see all. Lazybudoguy
Whoa still no responses? Anyone knows what makes Shorinji ryu sifferent in general?
Phalanx
I'm not sure if there is a difference. My Sensei uses both interchangeably; although it seems to be moving more toward Shorinji Toude now. The Sensei as a collective seem to be moving toward a more old school traditional approach to training. Perhaps that has something to do with it? Harkon72
I concur, my Sensei mentained that Shorin ryu and Shorinji Karatedo were two styles with the same root; Shuri Te. Look to the far mountain and see all.
