cici118 Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 I've seen famous japanese senseis like Naka sensei and their belts do like a cross on the back. I've read that it's a back support but I don't understand how.(I think it that cross is ugly)Can somebody explain me the importance of that cross?
sensei8 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I believe that you've answered your own question. It's a mild cross on the back where it's not an exaggerated cross. The supports not akin to a full back support, like one might see at a construction site, but still, the width of the belt times the manner of the cross at ones back plus the snugness of the belt does provide some sort of support to ones lower back.If I could see a picture of what you're referring to, I might be able to understand your question, but for now, I stand behind my understandings. **Proof is on the floor!!!
xo-karate Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I don't buy it. I don't think that belt will give you any more support if it's crossed or "hollywood".
Wastelander Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I was originally taught to completely overlap my belt in the Japanese manner. As I've transitioned to Shorin-Ryu, I've started crossing my belt in the back--the senior members of our organization in Okinawa cross their belt, including the head of the organization and his teacher (Chibana Chosin) before him. I've heard the "back support" thing before, but I don't believe it because the fabric just isn't stiff enough. I think it is simply an aesthetic preference. sensei8 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Yeah, I've always seen the belt as just that...just a belt, nothing more. I too have heard of the support thing myself and on my first post I was giving it a chance to work because I don't know if it does or doesn't work...but...it doesn't sound to off the grid...or does it. I don't know, even if I was to see it for myself I'd still have my doubts but if it works for some, then...cool. **Proof is on the floor!!!
