Do you get these in your club? A western approach maybe but possibly the best way we have of showing a well done to others as a group.

Take our lesson tonight, we had a focus on new Kata as we have just had a grading, some have already been introduced to their next Kata but near the end of the lesson it was a bit of a test to see who had learnt it.

Each grade went out in front and did their new Kata as best they could and each got a round of applause from the other students, come near the end and I was put on the spot and given 2 seconds notice of Kata Jion, I performed it as best I could with plenty of power and speed as everyone was watching. I got a round of applause, apart from the Sensei I could have been making it up but did my best.

Hopefully I showed how best to do Kata including being out of breath after etc.

I was grateful for the clapping but not expecting it, also our Friday lesson has always finished on applause, possibly a modern/western way of showing respect and apreciation instead of just a deeper bow?

At the end of every Judo class right after we bow out, we all clap for each other right before we put away the mats. I like it. It's a nice little gesture and a good blend of the east and west-- the bow followed by the clap.

The junior grades in our classes always applaud eachother when they do well. The final bow at the end of every class is greeted with applause too. As you say, it finishes the class well and makes us feel good.

Look to the far mountain and see all.

It is expected of all students in our dojo. Giving value to others by clapping is a lesson in respect-treating people the way you want to be treated.

We do it quite a bit. Always at the end of class after bowing to show thanks and appreciation to your fellow students and instructor. And most classes we are pulled up in small groups to do our forms and to spar, we always clap for the people who got up.

I think it's a common thing in British TKD. The majority of tournaments I go to, people will inevitably clap after every competitor has done their form and after each sparring bout. If a fighter lands a very well executed shot, people will always give applause, even if the person is against one of their own fighters.

We don't do it either.

I also concur that it's a great way to show fellow students ones appreciation for whatever reasons. Heart felt appreciation can be delved out in so many different ways, and I believe that the applause isn't concentrated on one continent over an another. Is it culture? Or... is it just the way that one was raised and/or feels for what's just been witnessed?

In Kyokushin, I've seen it after particularly tough gradings or a good kumite match.

In my Judo classes though, I see it a lot more. Typically after our uchikomi everyone will go around and do a few fits and throws as our head instructor watches, and if the throw is good we typically clap there. We also clap after randori or shiai matches.

In our BJJ class we used to clap, but instructor said that he is not a monkey performing a show, please don't clap your hands for him.

So we don't - just shake hands with every one.
