steviewaddy82 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Hi guys ive just got my new gi. Kyoto european cut kumite gi. Its smart as hell. Question is the sleeves go to just before my wrists. Short sleeves. Is this allowed in competition. Cheers guys
danbong Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I've read that many traditional karateka prefer shorter sleeves and legs as they believe it helps them to move faster. Just above the wrists sounds ok, but check with the tournament promoter to be sure. For example, the tournament circuit my school participates in requires that the sleeves reach the elbows. ichi-go ichi-e 一期一会one encounter, one chance
steviewaddy82 Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 Thankyou. Yes i got a pdf of the wukf rules and it states the sleeves can be anywhere from the middle of the forearmsbut no longer than the wrists. If that makes sens. Thanks osu
ps1 Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 For most open competitions, no one cares much about the uniform. You could be up agaisnt kung fu artists that have completely different uniforms. "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
brickshooter Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 I used to shorten the arms to hinder my opponents from grabbing it with one hand and pummeling me with his other hand. I do recall looking pretty ridiculous in my gi.
Hawkmoon Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Not sure that I can offer to much to this conversation. As Kyokushin student the arms of our GIs are short, about half way down the forearm! Then many of us cut a little more off to take the sleeve just above the elbow! Our GIs is designed to give as much freedom as is required/possible.(Sosai Oyama worked with Isami to create our Gis)The only rule I am aware of id the sleeves cannot be rolled up, risk of catching body parts in the folds I guess. The short sleeves is to me a good thing, I feel much more relaxed/free'er in my movement when I fight as a result! “A human life gains luster and strength only when it is polished and tempered.”Sosai Masutatsu Oyama (1923 - 1994) Founder of Kyokushin Karate.
sensei8 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Check with that tournaments rules concerning "Attire", after that, I believe it's mute as to what to do or not to do. **Proof is on the floor!!!
