cheesefrysamurai Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I am wondering how often you guys (and gals) run through your kata and kihon.do you warm up and make a training session out of it throughout the week or just run through the motions when you can?How helpful is training in front of a mirror? Cobra_Kai Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I go through all my katas at least once a day, gotta get that muscle memory down. I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.~ Bruce Lee
RJCKarate Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I practice kata and kihon every day. I also teach it every lesson at my dojo.Mirrors are useful, but I actually watched someone perform a kata once with their head tilted a certain way, because they always looked in a mirror when practicing. JasonW Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I practice daily. I stretch every morning. I go through katas before I leave for work, when I get to work before I punch in, on my lunch break, when I get home from work, and various times throughout the evening. If I'm watching TV commercials are a great time to run through katas, when I'm cooking, if I'm waiting I'm either stretching or going through kata. Sometimes if I find myself in a bathroom in a store or restaurant and I have enough room and nobody is around. For me the only questions are 1, do I have room. 2, do I have time? Harkon72 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I practice Kata and Kihon every other day. I go to the gym twice a week and practice with my Sensei every friday night. I try and get a couple of runs in every week too. Look to the far mountain and see all.
FangPwnsAll7 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I practice it at home but my dojo practices it once a week... Tang Soo Do - Red Belt (2nd GUP)
bushido_man96 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 It just depends. Right now, I'll do some easy walk-throughs at times while at home. At class, I'll do some prior to starting for warmups. Sometimes, if I work the afternoon shifts, I'll spend an hour a day or every other day working hard on forms. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
The Greatest Disciple Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 I know 22 kata, and I practice them all once a day when I wake up. Harlan Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 I didn't have access to a mirror for years, and belatedly realize it could have benefitted me/given good feedback. As for forms, I practice daily, but only run through a complete set of forms during a two hour class. Daily practice usually starts as a run through forms, but I basically use it as a minder function...I stop and focus where I know I need to work on something in particular. Leaves fall.
Wastelander Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 I practice at least some of my kata every single day--typically, I try to get through Naihanchi, Passai, and Kusanku. Although it may not be as efficient, I just practice things as the mood strikes me throughout the day, rather than setting aside time specifically to practice and make a workout out of it. My kihon I do practice outside of class, but not on any sort of regular basis--I help with 3-6 basic classes per week, and I get extra kihon practice at that time.
