what to buy with $20? Martial arts related of course.

wrist wraps

cheap uniform

a mat fee at a different dojo

blackbelt mag

small wall mountable makiwara

shuriken

beans or sand and a bucket for hand conditioning

boards to break

I like the bucket and sand idea

A good book, "The Way of the Warrior - The Paradox of the Martial Arts."

Gas for my car to ensure that I'll be at my dojo to teach.

To help pay for someone's entrance fee at the next local open tournament.

To eat somewhere after teaching all day/night.

To give it to one of my students for whatever they need it for.

WOW...the list could go on and on because I'm very resourceful when I put my mind to it.

Btw, great topic!!

Nothing. Save it, put it in a bank. Then the next time you have $20, put it into that same bank. Continue for a while and before long, presto...you'll have enough money to pay for a year of classes.

A hammer. Makes a great bludgeon, and you can use it while building makiwara and such.

Well, a lot of the stuff I want that is related to martial arts these days costs more than $20. That said, I would most certainly find a good book that isn't currently in my collection. Most of the stuff that you can buy may be helpful, but it isn't generally necessary. At some point, additional knowledge is necessary to continue your training effectively, and sometimes a good book can provide that--or, at least, it can provide some insight or inspiration to help you along the way.
