It's difficult to find good documentation on this. Everything I've read says Kano used white and black belts (though not the type we think of today) to separate his students. Additionally, I've read that Koizumi is credited with adding in additional colors while teaching in Paris in 1935.

It was Mikonosuke Kawaishi who is often (mistakenly) credited with introducing the coloured belt system in Paris in 1935.

Koizumi was credited as doing so (in london) as early as 1926, some 9 years before Kawaishi had even arrived in France.

Koizumi was featured in a BBC 4 documentary "Everybody Was Kung fu fighting" and in it they confirm these facts.

As for the reasoning behind the colours - I don't know.

Thanks

I finished the portion of the belt research. I am doing a page on the rest of the topics. Started on the topic of "sparring" today. Researching equipment, free sparring, and point sparring. Also, tournaments.

Sounds like you are making good progress! If you are on the topic of sparring, you have a lot of things you can cover! I think you should be sure to include knockdown sparring and MMA sparring, if you can :)
