sensei8 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I started when I was 7 years old. It took me 11 years to reach Shodan. However, it took me 6 years to reach my Junior Black Belt, which I earned when I was 13 years old, and in that, I couldn't test for my Shodan until I was 18 years old. **Proof is on the floor!!!
xtremo54 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 5 years to reach 1st Dan, 2 years more for 2nd Dan, 4 years more for 3rd Dan, 5 years more for 4th Dan.......and since then I've held my 4th Dan for 20 years. I'm getting my moneys worth out of this one!
ShoriKid Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 3 years and a month to reach shodan, training an average of 5 days a week. Had a nidan as a training partner that a lot of that work went in with as well. Kisshu fushin, Oni te hotoke kokoro. A demon's hand, a saint's heart. -- Osensei Shoshin Nagamine
JonWal Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 In our Wado organisation it'll take a minimum of 7 years to reach BB if you take each grading on schedule. Wado
Shizentai Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 5 years, perhaps a bit under. I started when I was 14. I "barely passed" black belt at 19 (my sensei told me).... three months later when a natural disaster smashed my home town I began traveling the world to train. Shizentai Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 No way. Sorry to hear about your homeThank you for your concern, but I'm sorry if I worried you too much. It was a good number of years ago now that this happened. Everyone I know has settled back down there (well, everyone but me). Luckily when it happened I was at an age when being abruptly ousted from one's house is a natural progression. "My work itself is my best signature."-Kawai Kanjiro
kanoner Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 7 Years. 1 year break at 5 kyu, and 6 months wait for regrading in kata. After that was Shotokan. That took me 1 year to earn shodan. I trained 2 times per day 4 days a week. Not to mention, my experience in the basics and prior martial arts experience was a great help. How? Wouldn't you still have to do the gradings? I can see how your previous experience could help a lot, but only in regards to double grading. Just curious. Is this in JKA?

I offered to take others, but was instructed to wear my black belt from day 1. This was through the Kwanmukan, not JKA.
