inyctrotter
I think asians have better things to do. We have other jobs than fighting. I also think that Asian martial arts teach not to "abuse" the art as in using it for only self defense. Maybe this teaching is diluted when taught to others. This is what i think, very intresting topic.
G95champ
Could have something to do with the gov. of China. They are not big on civil rights and all. Howeve they have always backed athletics in the olympics so I don't know. Only other think I can think of is that most Chinese arts focus on PP strike and open hand strikes. In a lot of NHB events these are BARRED. Which lead to the biggest question why are holds barred in NHB? LOL. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Karateka_latino
They don't go to tournaments because they are into forms and have problems with Real Contact sparring. That's the part i don't like about Forms. Chinese styles have to learn sometimes around 50 forms of 150 moves each. How much time do you have to learn the other skills?, That thinking "my art is too deadly for competition" is B.S. This days, most every style can compete. If you dont is because you aren't interest and your training is for other reasons, But please, "I don't want to abuse of you using my Iron Hand techniques", BAH!!!! G95Champ, Open Hand strikes CAN be used, i think people just dont use them because most of them are trained in Muay Thai or Boxing and don't know how to use the open hand strikes. For effective hand strikes watch UFC 3 kenpo stylist Keith Hackney knocked down a 600 pounds Sumo Stylist with an Open hand strike. So far, the only Kung Fu stylist i've saw in NHB is Jason DeLucia (5 animals Kung fu) Lost to Royce Gracie in UFC 2 but have done Okay in Pancrase fights. see you. rabid hamster
there's probably really good chinese art guys(like the shoalin monks in china) but they can't leave china or they just aren't interested in tournaments. but it is mixed martial arts.... if you do a stand up art like karate or something well yeah you would lose, you don't have an idea what to do on the ground, unless your karate teaches groundfighting. even if it does it probably wouldn't be as good as BJJ or something. and most karate/kungfu/whatever ppl don't train as much as someone who's main goal is to win MMA tournaments. i dont think many go full contact either, and if they do they wear a lot of safety stuff. It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye.
G95champ
I have saw UFC III many many times. Hackney was one of my favorites in the early days lol. Palms and ridge hands are one thing but I was refering to spear hands, tiger claws, etc. I do agree with what you said however. I also totally agree about he kata thing. Most guys who get in NHB fights are guys that just want to fight. Most people who study karate or kung fu do it for other reasons. If you want to learn to fight karate and kung fu are not the 2 styles to get into because of the time spent in kata, and traditional moves. BJJ, Kickboxing, and other combat styles get much more involved in actually combat much much faster. So a person who is of karate or kung fu training would not be likely to enter a NHB fight because they got in MA for totally differant reasons. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Karateka_latino
OH, by the way.... i found a similiar Post in another forum. And they blame the Chinese Goverment for the lack of contact sparring in Chinese M.A. For sooo many years. It looks like when the Chinese Goverment took over M.A. They banned Contact sparring because it was too "barbaric" and "inhuman". So they restrict it to just Forms. Just a couple of years ago, they started the whole "San shou" competitions officially trying to bring back the Full contact part of Kung Fu. I wish a Kung fu stylist come here and give his opinion about it.
