He doesn't make me look bad. I've never met the guy, so I don't worry about what he does.

The muggers were the thugs here; not the victim. I'm not saying what he did is something I would have done myself, but since he had the skill and ability to tweet a beating, then kudos to him. To me, it demonstrates the level of control he was able to exude over an opponent.

I'd also like to point out that many of the Gracies probably don't adhere to the kind of spiritual and philosophical aspects of Eastern Martial Arts practitioners would. They come from a completely different society, and they embrace that. I think that's to be applauded, as well.

^ true but I think he goes above a level of self defence in specifically hunting down one of the attackers, then choking him out multiple times and beating him whilst he's unconscious. Forget Eastern philosophy and spirituality; Renzo Gracie demonstrated arrogance and cockiness. Defend yourself and get away. Don't go and re-engage. He may be a fantastic martial artist but he doesn't know that the guy didn't have a gun concealed or a weapon that he could have pulled out on him. He may be a BJJ blackbelt but he's not made of steel. If anything it demonstrates a gross level of naivety to think that he's untouchable. He got lucky in that the mugger didn't go and get more buddies or didn't pull out a weapon on him. And choking the guy out and beating him whilst he's out? Who does that?!? Sounds a little psychotic to me. Maybe do it once if you really are that way inclined but 3 times counts as excessive use of force in my book. Besides tweeting about it is very very stupid as if he's caused any lasting damage, he can probably expect a lawsuit. Do it but don't brag about it.

Based on the tweet, The facts are that regardless of their motive, which we do not know, these guys committed no crime. Asking for a cigarette is not a crime; they were attacked by Gracie multiple times. He is the one who committed the crime.

I don't think we should confuse "facts" and "tweets."

No crime was "reported" here. That doesn't mean there were no crimes, nor do we know the intent. Gracie felt there was intent on the other part of the others to mug him, so he proactively defended himself. I would rather be proactive if I saw all the signs there, than be reactive, and end up in an obituary or a hospital bed.

Does self defense extend to hunting down the guys after they ran away?

The Tweets would be used against him in a court room . Based on what he tweeted, There was no mugging or attempted mugging at all but you call them muggers based on what fact?. Thinking these guys are muggers is not fact.

I could say in court that I was a little drunk and walking down X Street and asked a guy for a smoke and he attacked me, choked me out 3 times and beat me when i was out.

Most likely not, unless he can some how articulate that he thought the guy was a threat to someone else. In this case, I'm not sure he could do that.

Sure, the tweets could be used against him. At this point, though, have there been any charges filed?

I would also like to point out that I did not site any facts to state they were muggers. In the reading, they were referred to as muggers, so that's where I get my labels for the thread. As far as I'm concerned, there aren't any discernible facts in the article, nor can we really infer any.
