Martial Arts Misconceptions

Recommended Posts

if I had to do something about it, I'd probably go for their throat first, their eyes second, and then try to break something on them. That usually gets them thinking!

This is a good point. People think that martial arts is what they see in the movies - punches and kicks and acrobatics - when in reality, it's much more brutal than that. We have techniques that will kill. Techniques that we have practiced a thousand times. Techniques that we can execute by instinct.

As martial artists, we really are dangerous and can be lethal, but the ignorant the of martial arts tend to not really think further than "boxing with kicks."

Heh, ever get this one, when someone finds out you're a martial artist?

"Oh, remind me not to mess with you!"

Why? Do you think I'm a thug? Alternately, would you "mess with" me if you thought I was easy prey?

MYTH: Because you are a friend or acquaintance of mine, and I am a full contact knockdown martial artist, I will totally beat someone up if you ask me to or try to pay me to.

FACT: No.

Totally agree, why do people think that if you do martial arts they have you as their "Minder" (not too sure if they have an American equivalent) but us Brits will remember Arthur Daly and Terrence

Mostly it's not that they think you're a thug. It's sarcasm.

MYTH: Shindokan is totally dependent on Tuite.

FACT: No! It's just our most preferred tool.

MYTH: Kyusho jitsu works all of the time.

FACT: No it doesn't. To many parameters and the like for it to work all of the time.

The myth that I hate is that a creative soul (or in some cases, a greedy one, but we are not focusing on them today)... cannot create a martial style. I do not see why not if the person can create movements within their body (or the bodies of their students) that work, are effective, and can be replicated with practice. Like I joked in another post... there were no martial arts before some caveman threw their arm out with their fist balled up... and therefore, the first punch.

Overall, it is in the eye of the creator, and if they can translate, the beholder.

Not specific, but I get the same when people find out that I used to work armed security... You are right, among friends it is usually humor, and with relative strangers, it is passive-aggressive motioning; trying to convince themselves that your knowledge (combined with the lack of theirs) is nothing to fear. This is a fear based response based on lack of knowledge.
