Only if you're a Spanish Ninja. Seriously though, beginner matches will not allow heavy contact to the face in most cases. Besides, getting hit in the face is good for the soul. You're likely more durable than you realize, just keep your chin down and your mouth shut.

Agreed, also being hit in the face isn't nice but neither is a strike to the groin, if you had to choose, which one would you prefer to protect?

I'd go with the titanium codpiece and sanchin dachi.

I would suggest you start wearing a cup, this is coming from someone who had to get a sonogram due to the large amount of scar tissue in that area. Even if the groin is not a legal target, accidents happen.

Getting hit in the face isn't all that bad, really--the first few times it tends to make you mad or panic (depending on how you naturally respond to things like that) but after a while it's just like getting hit anywhere else. Honestly, I find that when I wear headgear I tend to get hit in the head/face MORE OFTEN than when I don't, and I think it is partially because my peripheral vision is impaired and partially because my subconscious is telling me I have padding all over my head so I don't need to worry about getting hit (which isn't true because headgear doesn't actually decrease your risk of concussion). I would say that if they allow elbows or knees to the head then headgear would be good, since those striking surfaces don't have padding on them, but if it's just punches and kicks and you have to wear pads on your hands and feet already then I wouldn't bother. As previously mentioned, beginner divisions don't usually allow much face contact, if any.

And PLEASE get a cup!
