Do you have an 'achilles heel' Kata, one that gets you everytime because you just can't get it sorted in your head!

When I was studying Wado Ryu Pinans Yodan and Godan were so similar that I often mixed them up and got so annoyed with myself, I mainly went wrong in Godan because it followed Yodan.

At the moment I am studying Shotokan and Heian Yondan is my pain in the rear...everytime there are two points in the kata where I don't trust myself that I know it and cock it up :kaioken: . I would say that 7 times out of 10, I can't do it all the way through without having to pause to think BUT when I teach it, its fine! Its so annoying!

Am I alone?

Kusanku Sho and Kusanku Dai tend to get me mixing up bits and pieces because they have so many similar movements.

There are 2 that I mess up on, and they are both katas that my sensei has specific to his system. We use all the heians and pinans, but there are 2 that he constructed that have a lot of cat stances AND back stances in, and I sometimes get confused when to use which one. I did have trouble at first learning Pinans because I learned all the heians up to Godan in Shotokan. But I've got them down now. I just earned my red belt Friday night. I learned Bassai Dai and Tekki Shodan (Naihanchi) already, so on my next exam, my Kata should be fine.

Kyokushin Kanku - it has over 50 steps when broken down into bunkai sections, a lot of which are throws and takedowns, and I get them mixed up all the time.

I think Koryo Poomsae is my "kata" at present. I can only get to a specific point and I forget it every time. I'll get it right one day LOL

I can no longer do, in laypersons term, the big jump/kick/turn/land, due to an injury to my right knee when I was much younger.

I was going to say that!

I know the moves, I know the timing, but somehow that kata just isn't there for me. Maybe one day it will be, but not anytime soon I wager.

I really like sochin too, but I am such a string bean that people just laugh when I do it. Nothing's worse that practicing a new kata and eliciting a laugh.

For me, it's Stature of the Crane.

My sensei kept telling me I move like a tiger trying to disguise himself as a crane.

I seriously hate that form. lol
