DoctorQui Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 Push ups as punishment totally work, but shouldn't be the only form of discipline.BUT is it right to dish out press/push ups to an adult who is paying for the priviledge, is already dedicated (otherwise they wouldn't be there) and are generally more attentive as opposed to kids, who are generally not disciplined, are there because of their parents and lose concentration or regularly do not pay attention. I belive that press ups should be used for the kids as a form of discipline, and that adults who are paying to be taught should be treated with more respect rather than being told to do 10 press ups because they made a mistake with a technique. We have only one instructor at our Dojo who dishes out press ups at the drop of a hat and often unfairly. Out of respect I say nothing but it has now got to a point where I put my head round the Dojo door and if my Sensei is not there and this guy is taking the class, I wont bother training.
darksoul Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Ahh, I see what you mean. My short answer - yes. Whether they are paying or not... actually, ESPECIALLY if they are paying, they want proper training. I regularly give push-up orders to my adult students if I deem it necessary. These instances are rare. One way I do dish out push-ups are as follows. Student is, say... orange belt. In Shaolin Kempo they should know their 8 point blocking system inside and out at this rank. The student is also a paying adult who is respectful, dedicated, etc... in other words, a gem. You are drilling them on blocks and you call out block #7 and he does block #5 or just freezes and doesn't remember. Then I will give them 10 push-ups. Same with defensive maneuvers. At orange belt, they have 6, 7, 3, 5, and 18. If I call out DM 18 and they don't remember, 10 push ups. But as I said in a post I stupidly deleted, Shaolin Kempo is also heavy on health, not just technique, so the extra push-ups go into developing your body and health as well as serve as a punishment/memory jogger. bushido_man96 Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Punishment and reinforcement aren't necessarily the same thing. Think of them as reinforcement. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
darksoul Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 "Reinforcement..." yes... I like that! Shodan - Shaolin Kempo███████████████▌█
JonWal Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 No problem doing pushups as punishment..However, my pet hate is when one or more member of the class (usually the same ones) play up, the whole class gets 20 press ups. I happily get on with my press ups, finish and stand back up ready... then the count starts at 1... Wado

Lupin1 Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 We don't really do any form of physical anything in the adult class since most of the class are old black belts over 50. We mostly concentrate on technique. I started going to the kids' class last week (going in a few minutes, actually) and they do push up there. The instructor is ALWAYS threatening them with push ups. It's weird cuz I'm not at all use to it. As an adult, though, I think I would feel weird if he told me specifically to do push ups for something. I felt weird even doing them along with the kids because we as a class didn't kiai loud enough (we don't kiai at all in the adult class...). I don't really learn that way. If I'm doing something wrong, I fix it by mentally analyzing what I'm doing and then correcting it, not by pushing myself against the floor a few times. Seems silly to me.

Its only one instructor that does this, the chief instructor never uses press ups. I felt annoyed particularly as that same instructor just prior to this told us all to do Heian Yondan then exploded because we weren't doing Heian Shodan (the kata he meant to say!) and made the whole class do press ups.
Harkon72 Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 They can punish me all they want, I'll just get fitter! Look to the far mountain and see all.
